The Universidad San Sebastián is an educational institution that provides professional training in Chile. With a total of 4 campuses across the country and over 25,000 students, the university is engaged in various initiatives to improve its management and decision-making processes. In the university's educational project, a formative approach stands out, which is capable of accommodating a diverse range of students within a university community that contributes to an academically valid process, linked to the environment, and oriented towards the achievement of well-rounded, competent, and compassionate graduates.
Business Challenges
In this context, the Universidad San Sebastián recognized the need to generate an integrated view of management and key indicators for the different teams and areas within the institution:
Complexity in accessing information and limited availability of data for decision-making, as the existing data warehouse had several limitations in terms of access and speed.
Decision-making based on limited and outdated information.
Reliance on manual processes for descriptive analysis, with limited utilization of business data sources, resulting in increased costs for generating management indicators.
The need to expand the coverage of key management indicators to all areas and stakeholders involved.
Results
An integrated team was formed between USS and Arkhotech to support cross-functional business information for different units within the institution, such as enrollment, faculty workload, billing, assessments, and monitoring. An integrated working approach was adopted to continuously identify needs and address them through analytical data models, large-scale data transformation and enrichment processes, and business intelligence visualization tools. This collaboration aimed to ensure a comprehensive view of the institution's operations and enable data-driven decision-making.
Data Analytics Landscape at USS
As part of USS's strategy for success and future growth, a Data Lake was established to facilitate the loading and governance of the institution's information in an automated and university-ready process. Through distributed information processes designed for scalability and efficiency, updated data catalogs can be generated in various optimized analytical models for management purposes, enriching the data for consumption. Lastly, the ability to use the information in BI tools and dashboards was ensured through the exposure of data in standard technologies.
Benefits
Increased cross-functional visibility of institutional management indicators, promoting a context of comprehensive improvement for all areas.
Incorporation of descriptive analytics and business intelligence, with indicators and data processing processes that reduce analysis time.
Integration of institution-specific data sources such as ERP, Admissions, etc.
Creation of over 20 key indicators in areas such as Alerts, Billing, Faculty Evaluation, Graduation, etc., to enhance institutional management.
Development of an innovative and future-ready data strategy, enabling the university to leverage advanced use cases using management information.
